Five Reasons Why Your Air Conditioner Isn't Cooling Your Home

July 10, 2020

When it’s a scorching summer morning in Omaha, nothing could be worse than recognizing your air conditioner isn’t functioning the way it should. The last thing you want to do is schedule HVAC service. But your HVAC is a pretty complicated system, so it can be challenging to determine what’s triggering the problem without training.

That’s why Interstate Heating & Air Conditioning wrote this guide to help you find out what might be taking place with your cooling system. Here, you’ll uncover a few prevailing situtations that explain why your space is feeling a little too warm. And though a few of these are easy DIY projects, you could want to turn to a pro for AC repair.

And if that’s the case, Interstate Heating & Air Conditioning is prepared to take care of your home. Here are five reasons why your air conditioner may not be cooling your house in Omaha.

1. Your Thermostat Settings Could Be Off

Every family uses their thermostat a little differently to work with their specific preferences. Even so, many homeowners make the misstep of setting their thermostat to “On” instead of “Auto.” Because of this setting, the fan in your system will continue to blow even once you’ve attained your desired temperature.

This can appear like your ducts are releasing room temperature air, when in fact it’s simply utilizing the fan more frequently than required. Try switching this setting and see if things cool off.

2. Your Air Conditioner Needs a Good Cleaning

There are two primary places to investigate for dirt or dust accrual when your cooling system doesn’t seem to be operating right.

First, take a look at your HVAC filter. If you don’t switch out your filter routinely, buildup can make it hard for air to travel through and cool down your house. If your filter is clearly dirty or dusty, it’s more than likely time to replace it. (And as a rule, you should replace it about once every three months or more frequently.)

If your filter seems clean, head to your external unit. Make sure there’s enough room around your air conditioner and clean up plants or dirt stuck there. This element of your home comfort system releases the heat from within your house. If the coils outside are clogged, you won’t be cool in your home.

We recommend scheduling professional air conditioner maintenance each year to keep your unit running properly and to keep your warranty valid.

3. Your System is Releasing Refrigerant

Refrigerant is the stuff that cools down the air in your home. It goes between your indoor and outdoor units to soak up and let off heat, to help your space remain cool. If there is a leak along that system, you won’t be comfortable again until you set professional air conditioning repair.

Indicators of a refrigerant leak include a decline in treated air, more expensive utility bills, frozen evaporator coils and odd hissing noises originating from your system.

If you feel refrigerant might be leaking, call Interstate Heating & Air Conditioning for system repair as soon as possible. Refrigerant can also be damaging to your family’s health.

4. One or More Elements Have to Be Replaced

Your cooling system contains a a handful of key parts. These include the blower, evaporator coils, compressor, fan, condenser coils and expansion valve. If any part is failing, your home comfort will suffer.

Our Interstate Heating & Air Conditioning technicians are certified and experienced in HVAC. They can help you figure out and fix any issue.

5. Your Air Conditioner Should Be Replaced

If your equipment is over 10 years old, it is probably time to consider new air conditioner installation. As your system gets older, it sadly won’t function as well as it has in the past. And it may be making your home too warm.

If your HVAC unit is on the younger side but still isn’t properly cooling your home, it could be the wrong size for your household. Air conditioners are not one-size-fits-all. A system that’s too small absolutely can’t cool a house the way an appropriately sized HVAC can.
