Do I Need a Zoned Home?

A zoned heating and cooling system splits your home into two (or more) zones which are altered by its own thermostat. Are some areas in your home more comfortable than others? Do you have hot and cold spots? There are many factors that can play into this, but a zoned home comfort system just may be the one solution you need. Zoning will not only keep you more cozy, but when working with programmable thermostats, it may also help you save on your heating and cooling expenses.

How Does It Work?

After the zones of your home have been determined, zoned heating and cooling operates by using dampers that are installed into your ductwork. These dampers control air flow all around your home. Each zone of your home has its own thermostat installed to better customize and control your comfort. All of the individual thermostats are connected to a control panel that runs your HVAC system.

Is A Zoned Home Right for Me?

A simple way to note the importance of zoning is to imagine you controlled each light in your home with one switch. That would be incredibly inefficient and impractical. The same is true for having one thermostat controlling your entire home. With a zoned heating and cooling system you have control of every zone of your home. Zones are normally mapped out by finding the areas in the home that have similar heating and cooling needs.

Even in homes that are appropriately insulated and constructed well can suffer from hot and cold spots. Some standard architectural features that result in this are multiple stories, large windows and vaulted ceilings. As we all discovered in science class, heat rises. That means that your top floors are destined to be warmer than lower levels. It only makes sense to have a specific thermostat for different levels of your home. Zoned homes can also be adjusted to your family’s personal comfort desires.

A zoned home will not only save you on bills, but it will keep you and your family more comfortable.
