How to Keep Your Air Conditioner Running Well Through the Fall

August 24, 2016

Your air conditioner has worked hard this summer and we still have more heat on its way. Just because the date on the calendar has moved over to fall doesn’t mean you’re through with your AC for the season. Keeping up with annual AC maintenance, while also following a few other pointers, can help you maintain your air conditioner while keeping your home cozy too.

Clean Around Your Outdoor Unit

Debris can pile up around your outside unit, specifically during the fall. When the time arrives to rake up the leaves in your yard, be sure to rake up the leaves and debris around your air conditioner. Debris can inhibit air flow, causing your system to work harder and wear down faster. We want your air conditioner to last as long as possible.

Raise the Temperature on Your Thermostat

Set your thermostat at the highest temperature you can while still being comfy. Whenever possible, take advantage of other cooling methods such as fans. The lower you set your thermostat, the harder your system will have to work to reach that temperature. You may think switching off your system completely will save on energy and help your system, but that just creates more ground for it to make up when you turn it back on. It will have to work harder for a longer amount of time, which is something else that could lead to premature system failure.
