Three Tips to Keep Your Omaha Home Comfortable During the Winter Months

November 24, 2015

The dipping temperatures in Omaha aren’t heading anywhere, and while it’s not hard to daydream about the warmer weather, it’s crucial to remember that you can stay just as comfortable during winter. Of course, your furnace plays a huge role in this, which is why it’s so vital to complete annual furnace service.

We do have to bring up the fact that there are only a couple things that will provide as much to your comfort this season as a well-tuned furnace. That’s why furnace service is suggested to be done annually. After all, who wants to spend a long winter not knowing if their furnace is going to keep them covered the entire season?

Already check off your annual furnace service? Here are a few other jobs you can do to help keep your home comfortable:

  • Energy audit — most energy companies will offer an energy audit for your home so you can find areas that need improving. You could be surprised what areas are letting hot or cold air to sneak out.
  • Weatherstripping — regardless of the door, doors allow the opportunity for a lot of cold air to make it’s way inside your home. However, when your door is shut, you may still have air making its way indoors. Check to see if your weatherstripping is all good or if it’s worn, torn, or damaged in any other way that could be permitting cold air inside. If you notice any issues, weatherstripping is easy to swap and can take care of the problem.
  • Recessed lighting — one of the most common culprits for air leaks could be your recessed lighting. Depending on the light’s age, they might be letting all the hot air in your home sneak out through your ceiling. Fixing this is as simple as sealing it with caulk or aluminum tape.

These couple of tips are just the beginning, but do recognize that there are other simple fixes you can complete once you’ve had annual furnace service completed. Many of them can be cost-effective and easy jobs to complete on the weekend.
